5 Mistakes to Avoid When Setting Goals

Rethink Your Goals: Aim Higher, Achieve More

The start of a new year often brings reflections on unfulfilled goals. If you’ve felt frustrated about falling short, you’re not alone. But before you blame talent or skills, consider this: even the most talented individuals fail when they set goals incorrectly.

Working toward a goal and setting a goal are two different things.

For years, I believed I was setting goals the right way—using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-Framed) method. But is this truly how great innovators set their goals? Do you think Thomas Edison or the Wright brothers followed the SMART rule? While their goals were specific and time-bound, most deemed them impossible. Yet, they pursued them anyway.

If your goal is to earn ₱12M a month or travel the world, how many people would believe in you? Would you still chase that dream, knowing others might see it as unrealistic?

The Mistakes That Keep You Stuck

Too often, we set goals based on what seems achievable, not on what we truly desire. This limits us to mediocrity. Here are five common goal-setting mistakes to avoid:

  1. We set goals based on what we think we can achieve.
The moment we step beyond our comfort zone, challenges and failures arise. But pain is inevitable, whether your goal is modest or ambitious. So why not dream big? Choose a goal that excites you—one where the reward outweighs the struggle. As Walt Disney said, “It’s kinda fun to do the impossible.”
  2. We stick too closely to our plans.
The world is constantly changing. If you cling too tightly to a plan, you might end up lowering your goal just to fit it. Instead, be flexible. Remember the goal, not just the plan.
  3. We believe we must know how to achieve the goal before setting it.
The Wright brothers had no formal aviation training. They simply had a vision and pursued it relentlessly. You don’t need all the answers today—just the courage to start.
  4. We question whether we are worthy of success.
Never underestimate yourself. Growth is a journey, and as long as you embrace continuous improvement, you will always have room to rise.
  5. We think the goal is about achieving the outcome.
The true purpose of a goal is not just to attain it—it’s to push you to grow into the person you need to become.

This year, don’t just set goals—set bold, life-changing goals. Dream bigger, take risks, and embrace the journey of growth. What’s the one ambitious goal you’ve been afraid to pursue? Drop a comment or message me—I’d love to hear about it!
