Five Daily Leadership Questions That Transform Teams
(Inspired by John C. Maxwell’s Team Development Principles)
Every leader wants a stronger team.
But great teams don’t happen by accident—they are built on purpose, one decision, one conversation, and one day at a time.
Over the years of coaching leaders and business owners, I’ve learned this simple truth:
The health of your team always reflects the daily habits of the leader.
That’s why the most effective leaders I know ask themselves five powerful questions every day. I call this the Rule of 5 for Team Development.
If you consistently live out these five questions, you don’t just manage people—you multiply leaders.
Let’s walk through them.
1. “How Can I Make My Team Better Today?”
Great leaders don’t wait for problems—they look for potential.
The best way to improve your team is simple but not easy:
Listen first. Learn second. Lead last.
You can’t develop people you don’t truly understand.
Three Areas That Drive Daily Improvement
1. Communication – Ask Better Questions
-
What do I need my team to know right now?
-
What do they need me to know?
-
What might they be afraid to say?
2. Positioning – Put People Where They Can Win
Ask yourself:
“Where does this person naturally succeed?”
When people are positioned right, confidence rises, and performance follows.
3. Game Plan – Give Clear Direction
People don’t fail because they lack effort.
They fail because they lack clarity.
A motivated team without a clear plan is still a frustrated team.
2. “Am I a Good Example for My Team?”
Your team may listen to what you say—but they will always follow what you do.
People do what people see.
You model leadership in two powerful ways:
-
For clarity – They understand what excellence looks like.
-
For credibility – They believe you deserve to lead.
Ask yourself often:
-
Clock Question: What am I doing right now? (This shapes culture.)
-
Compass Question: Where am I leading us tomorrow? (This protects vision.)
Three Questions Every Follower Asks Their Leader
-
Do you care for me? → Am I showing genuine care?
-
Can you help me? → Am I adding value to their growth?
-
Can I trust you? → Am I consistent and honest?
True leadership influence is built on:
Credibility (what you’ve done) + Productivity (what you’re doing) = Moral Authority
3. “Am I Creating a Growth Environment for My Team?”
Getting to the top and staying there require two very different skill sets.
Getting There Requires:
-
Giftedness
-
Potential
-
Timing
-
Focused effort
Staying There Requires:
-
Growth
-
Productivity
-
Maturity
-
Time-tested discipline
The Signs of a Real Growth Environment
You know you’ve built a growth culture when:
-
People ahead of you stretch you
-
You are continually challenged
-
Your focus is forward
-
The atmosphere is affirming
-
Comfort zones are regularly stretched
-
You wake up excited
-
Failure is treated as feedback, not defeat
-
Others around you are growing
-
People desire change, not fear it
-
Growth is modeled and expected
Great leaders don’t just build businesses—they build environments where people grow.
4. “Am I Evaluating How Much Time I Give Each Team Member?”
Time is your most valuable leadership currency.
The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule) teaches us this:
80% of your results often come from 20% of your people.
That doesn’t mean you ignore the rest—but it does mean you must intentionally invest in:
-
Your leaders
-
Your culture carriers
-
Your high-potential team members
As the saying goes:
“You may have my heart—but you earn my time.”
Strategic time investment creates multiplied impact.
5. “Am I Developing the Depth of My Team?”
Strong teams don’t rely on one or two people.
They are built on depth, not dependency.
Six Dimensions of Team Depth
-
Relationship Depth – Connection
-
Diversity Depth – Completion
-
Servanthood Depth – Care
-
Skill Depth – Competence
-
Leadership Depth – Continuity & Clarity
-
Growth Depth – Capacity for the future
And every leader must answer two final questions honestly:
-
Am I developing myself?
-
Am I developing others?
Because you can never grow a team beyond your own growth.
Application: Turn Awareness into Action
Here’s a powerful leadership exercise you can do this week:
-
Rate yourself on all five questions using a 1–5 scale.
-
Ask your team to rate you honestly.
-
Sit down together.
-
Discuss the results with humility and courage.
That single conversation can unlock:
-
Deeper trust
-
Clearer communication
-
Stronger alignment
-
And a real team breakthrough
Final Thought
Team development is not an event.
It is a daily leadership decision.
If you consistently ask these five questions, you won’t just build a productive team—you’ll build a legacy of leaders.
