The Man of Steel. What Is His Secret?

I will not be talking about Superman. I am sorry if I disappoint you.

Are you looking for ways to achieve your goals? I suppose, like everybody else, your answer is yes. So, let me share with you an excellent way to realize your success. As a professional business coach, one way I help people is through the mastermind group.

Throughout history, many great successes of people and organizations have resulted from a mastermind group. Some mastermind advocates are the Knights of the Roundtable, Franklin Roosevelt’s “Brain Trusts,” Andrew Carnegie and the Steel Mill, Henry Ford, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffet. Their successes were not only confined to their achievements but also positively impacted the country or the businesses they represented.

While they might have chosen a different approach, what unites them is their passion for bringing together like-minded individuals. Together, they brainstorm, share experiences, and exchange ideas in a supportive environment. The best ideas often blossom from the collaboration of many, rather than just one. That’s why the Mastermind is such a fantastic space for uncovering incredible ideas!

But what is a mastermind group?

Napoleon Hill introduced the concept of the “mastermind alliance.” He mentioned the word in his book The Law of Success. Eventually, it was expanded in the 1930s book Think And Grow Rich.

While Napoleon Hill called it a “mastermind alliance,” it was changed and modernized to a “mastermind group.”

To Hill, the mastermind group’s purpose is to help create an environment that supports and nurtures growth. He believed that a harmonious group of people who come together for a specific purpose or around one particular topic brings forth great ideas and the power of creativity that you cannot find when you work alone.

In one of the episodes on the History Channel entitled “The Men Who Built America.” Andrew Carnegie was one of the men who significantly impacted the American economy through his Steel Empire. I called him ‘”the man of steel.” Though he knew very little about steel manufacturing, he was able to build it to that magnitude. The secret to his success was not his expertise or knowledge in business but his understanding of people and how he surrounded himself with the right individuals. He was one of the most successful men in American history, and his mastermind group was very instrumental to his success.

Let us look at an excerpt from Napoleon Hill’s book that highlights this perfectly:

During a newspaper interview with the great steel magnate, I asked him (Andrew Carnegie) what made him successful. He replied by asking me to define the term success. When I told him I had a reference to his money, he said:

“Well, if you want to know how I got my money, I will refer you to these men here on my staff; they got it for me. We have a mastermind in this business. It is not my mind, and it is not the mind of any other man on my staff, but the sum of all these minds that I have gathered around me constitutes a mastermind in the steel business.

I have been gathering these men around me for many years and building this mind. Each man contributes a vital part in the building of this mind. I do not always agree with these men and with my staff on all matters, nor do they always agree with me. Perhaps some of us do not like each other from a personal viewpoint, but I know that I need these men, and they know that they need me in the maintenance of this Mastermind that is necessary for carrying on this steel business.”

A quote from John Maxwell, “One is too small a number to achieve greatness. No accomplishment of real value has ever been achieved by a human working alone,” best summarizes the power of the Mastermind.
