The Growth Mindset: Why Many Small Businesses Stay Stuck

A Reflection from The Trinity of Growth™ by Ronnie V. Marquez

Most entrepreneurs don’t lack hard work.

They lack alignment.

That may sound uncomfortable, especially for Filipino business owners who sacrifice daily for their families, employees, and dreams. But after years of coaching entrepreneurs and leading organizations, I’ve observed something repeatedly:

Many businesses stop growing not because they lack opportunities, but because their leaders stop growing. The leader’s personal growth determines the business’s expansion.

This blog shares insights from the book The Trinity of Growth™ by Ronnie V. Marquez. The book offers a framework to help Filipino entrepreneurs grow through Leadership, Business Competency, and Network Connections.

And among these pillars, growth starts with the first: Leadership.

More specifically, it begins with mindset.

Your business will only grow to the level that you do.

Many entrepreneurs believe growth is primarily about:

  • more capital,
  • more marketing,
  • more customers,
  • or better timing.

Those things matter.

But in reality, a leadership mindset sets the true limit on growth.

You can have a good product and still struggle.

You can work long hours and still feel stuck.

You can stay busy every day and still not move forward.

Why?

Because growth is not simply about doing more.

It is about becoming more.

What if the biggest limitation in your business is not the market… but your mindset?

That question changed my life personally.

After spending more than three decades in corporate leadership, I entered entrepreneurship believing experience alone would guarantee success.

It didn’t.

Suddenly, I was no longer operating inside a structured organization. I had to build the structure myself. I became the strategist, marketer, finance officer, operations manager, and problem-solver all at once.

I worked harder than ever before.

But the results did not match the effort.

There came a point when I questioned whether leaving corporate life was a mistake.

Then one simple realization changed everything:

“Maybe the problem isn’t the business. Maybe it’s me.”

That realization was painful but also freeing.

Because if growth depended on me, then growth was still possible.

Many entrepreneurs are trapped in inherited mindsets that quietly limit growth.

Filipinos are resilient, hardworking, and resourceful.

But many business owners unknowingly operate from old survival patterns:

  • avoiding difficult conversations,
  • staying in reactive mode,
  • overworking without a strategy,
  • waiting for certainty before acting,
  • or trying to control everything personally.

These mindsets may have helped us survive.

But survival is different from leadership.

And if we are not careful, we build businesses that depend entirely on us.

The result?

  • burnout,
  • confusion,
  • slow growth,
  • poor delegation,
  • and constant firefighting.

You become busy…

but not scalable.

If you don’t grow your mindset, your business won’t grow either.

This is the hidden danger.

Some businesses don’t collapse dramatically.

They simply plateau quietly.

The owner becomes exhausted.

The team becomes dependent.

Innovation slows.

The vision fades under daily pressure.

And eventually, the business becomes trapped by the founder’s capacity.

But the impact goes beyond business.

When leaders stop growing:

  • families feel the pressure,
  • Teams lose clarity,
  • opportunities disappear,
  • and future leaders never emerge.

This is why your leadership mindset is critical to growth.

Because leadership is not just about income.

It’s about influence, stewardship, and legacy.

Growth begins when leaders choose ownership.

One of the most powerful lessons I learned is this:

Action creates clarity.

Many entrepreneurs wait until they feel fully ready before making important decisions.

But clarity rarely comes before movement.

It comes through movement.

A growth mindset shifts you:

  • from fear to ownership,
  • from victim thinking to visionary thinking,
  • from reacting to leading,
  • from surviving to building.

You stop asking:

“Why is this happening to me?”

And you begin asking:

“What is this teaching me?”

That is the moment leadership begins to mature.

Three practical shifts every entrepreneur must make

1. Replace Limiting Beliefs

Identify one belief that is keeping you stuck.

Maybe it is:

  • “I’m not ready.”
  • “I can’t trust people.”
  • “I’m not good at leadership.”
  • “This is just how business is.”

Replace it with:

“I can learn.”

“I can grow.”

“I can build systems.”

“I can develop people.”

Growth starts with internal language.

2. Move from Activity to Clarity

Being busy is not the same as being productive.

Create space to think.

Pause regularly.

Ask:

  • What truly matters?
  • What creates long-term growth?
  • What should I stop doing?

Sometimes leadership growth starts not by adding more, but by removing distractions.

3. Develop Yourself Intentionally

Read.

Learn.

Seek mentors.

Build relationships with growth-minded people.

Your business reflects your leadership capacity.

If you want a stronger business, become a stronger leader first.

Don’t just build a business. Build the leader behind the business.

The greatest investment you can make is not merely in marketing, systems, or tools.

It is in your own growth.

Because:

  • Better leaders build better teams,
  • Better teams build better businesses,
  • And better businesses create lasting impact.

This is one of the core messages of The Trinity of Growth™: Leadership is the seed of sustainable growth. When the lessons of leadership, systems, and relationships are combined, businesses transform.

Imagine the impact when these elements—leadership, systems, and relationships—finally align in your business.

Imagine:

  • a business that no longer depends entirely on you,
  • a team that takes ownership,
  • clearer decisions,
  • healthier rhythms,
  • stronger relationships,
  • and a vision that outlives the founder.

That kind of growth is possible.

Not because circumstances suddenly become easy…

But because the leader becomes stronger.

And when the leader grows, everything else begins to grow with them.
